PHOTOMINO EUROPE
Once again I passed an image on to a colleague, this time in another European country – with a simple invitation: to respond to it with a new photograph within two weeks. Inspired by what he saw, felt or imagined, he created a new image that was then passed on to the next person in another country, and so on. This created a visual domino effect that spread across borders, cultures, languages and landscapes until all 27 member states of the European Union were connected.
At its heart, PHOTOMINO® is about connection through collaboration. In a time marked by division, uncertainty, and political tension, the project offers a different perspective: one built on attention, empathy, and creative dialogue. Playful, spontaneous, and deeply human, PHOTOMINO® shows how inspiration can travel freely across borders and how our differences themselves can become the starting point for new encounters, new ideas, and unexpected connections.
On the occasion of this year’s Photography Triennial, the professional association FREELENS is presenting PHOTOMINO® EUROPE at its Hamburg gallery, from 12 June to 10 September 2026.
Twelve of the international participants will join the opening on 11 June. An artist talk will also take place on 12 June, during which the artists will offer insights into their working processes and talk about inspiration, creative collaboration and cross-border exchange.

Opening Horizons
Exhibition project as part of Hamburg’s 2023 Presidency of the Bundesrat
Under the motto “Opening Horizons,” the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg assumed the presidency of the Bundesrat on November 1, 2022.
My photo “Das große Los” (The Big Win), inspired by this motto, is the initial image that I sent to one photographer per federal state, with the assignment to let it inspire them to create their own new work that opens horizons.
Commissioned by the Hamburg State Representation and Hamburg Marketing GmbH, this version of PHOTOMINO was created to artistically document the motto “Opening Horizons” and the solidarity and diversity of the 16 federal states.
Participating photographers:
Baden-Württemberg, Stefanie Möloth / Bayern, Herlinde Koelbl / Berlin, Natalie Kepesz / Brandenburg, Gordon Welters / Bremen, Anja Engelke / Hamburg, Nicole Keller / Hessen, Farideh Diehl / Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Erik Groß / Niedersachsen, Shirin Abedi / Nordrhein-Westfalen, Sabine Bungert & Stefan Dolfen / Rheinland-Pfalz, Thomas Brenner / Saarland, Lukas Ratius / Sachsen, Susann Jehnichen / Sachsen-Anhalt, Matthias Ritzmann / Schleswig-Holstein, Peter Rathmann / Thüringen, Nora Klein
The exhibition was shown at the Representation of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg in Berlin and at the Levantehaus in Hamburg.

1 Inspiration | 30 Weeks | 90 Photographers
A Photographic Experiment
As part of the HEARTBEAT PHOTO project grant program organized by the Friends of the House of Photography, a call was issued for proposals aimed at increasing the visibility of photography as a medium in Hamburg. I am delighted that my concept, PHOTOMINO, is one of the three selected projects.
Here’s how the PHOTOMINO concept works: I shared a photo I created with three colleagues who work in very different styles, asking them to let it inspire their own new work. Much like a domino effect, these images were then passed on to another colleague, and so on. The result is 90 images by 90 photographers from Hamburg.
This project highlights the diversity of photographic approaches and brings to life the immense collective power of inspiration. PHOTOMINO aims to demonstrate how creative and collaborative impulses can set us in motion and inspire us.
The exhibition was shown at the Multiple Box Gallery in Hamburg in 2022.
